Gum Grafts

Gum grafting is a restorative dental procedure to treat gum recession by augmenting or replacing lost gum tissue. During the procedure, tissue is sourced from either the patient's palate or a tissue bank and transplanted to the affected area, covering exposed tooth roots and improving the appearance of the gumline.

This surgical intervention can provide numerous benefits, including the restoration of gum health by protecting tooth roots from decay and sensitivity, enhanced aesthetics through a more balanced smile, reduced tooth sensitivity, improved oral function, and prevention of further gum recession, ultimately promoting long-term oral well-being and confidence in one's smile.

Who Can Benefit From Gum Grafts?

  • Individuals with gum recession caused by periodontal disease, aggressive brushing, or genetic factors.
  • Those experiencing tooth sensitivity, root exposure, or aesthetic concerns due to gum recession.
  • People with a high risk of developing gum recession, such as those with thin gum tissue or a history of gum disease.
  • Patients seek to protect their teeth from further damage and maintain optimal oral health and aesthetics.

The Procedure of Gum Grafts

Preoperative Assessment and Planning

Before undergoing a gum graft, your periodontist will thoroughly examine your gums and teeth to assess the extent of gum recession and determine the most suitable grafting technique for your needs. Preoperative imaging, such as X-rays or digital scans, may be performed to aid in treatment planning. Your periodontist will also discuss the procedure in detail, addressing any concerns or questions you may have.

Graft Harvesting or Preparation

Depending on the gum grafting technique chosen, tissue for the graft may be harvested from the patient's palate (roof of the mouth) or sourced from a tissue bank. In connective tissue grafts, a small flap of tissue is removed from the palate, and the underlying connective tissue is harvested. Free gingival grafts involve directly removing a piece of tissue from the palate. Alternatively, tissue from a tissue bank may be used for specific grafting procedures. The harvested or prepared tissue is then shaped and sized to fit the recipient site.

Graft Placement and Suturing

Once the graft material is ready, the gum grafting procedure begins. The recipient site, typically the area of gum recession, is thoroughly cleaned and prepared. The graft material is placed over the recession area and secured with sutures. Depending on the type of graft and the healing process, the sutures may be dissolvable or require removal after a specified period. Following graft placement, a protective dressing or membrane may be applied to aid in healing and protect the graft site. Contact us today!

The Benefits of Gum Grafts

Protection Against Tooth Sensitivity

Exposed tooth roots due to gum recession can lead to heightened sensitivity to hot, cold, and acidic foods and beverages. Gum grafts cover these exposed roots with healthy tissue, effectively reducing sensitivity and discomfort and allowing you to enjoy your favorite foods.

Prevention of Further Gum Recession

Gum recession worsens if left untreated, leading to more significant gum exposure and increased risk of dental problems. By addressing gum recession with grafting techniques, such as connective tissue grafts or free gingival grafts, the progression of recession can be halted, preserving the integrity of the gums and protecting against future complications.

Restoration of Gum Health

Gum grafts promote the regeneration of gum tissue and improve overall gum health. Gum grafts create a healthier oral environment by providing additional tissue to cover exposed roots and fill in recession areas, reducing the risk of gum disease, inflammation, and infection.

Enhanced Aesthetics

Receding gums can detract from the appearance of your smile, making teeth appear longer and uneven. Gum grafts restore balance to the gum line, creating a more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing smile. Whether you're concerned about the look of your smile or want to regain confidence in your appearance, gum grafts can help you achieve your desired aesthetic goals.

Preservation of Tooth Structure

Gum recession affects the gums and can expose the roots of the teeth, leading to erosion of the tooth structure and increased vulnerability to decay. By covering exposed roots with grafted tissue, gum grafts help preserve the underlying tooth structure, preventing further damage and preserving the longevity of natural teeth.

Improved Oral Function

Healthy gum tissue is essential for maintaining tooth stability and support. Gum grafts restore lost gum tissue, providing better support for the teeth and improving overall oral function, including chewing and speech. You can enjoy improved oral function and a better quality of life with restored gum health.
