What is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease is a bacterial infection in your gums that, when left untreated, can lead to destruction of the tissue surrounding your gums and can result in loss of tooth and other serious complications. At Blue Turtle Dental, our periodontists provide high-tech periodontal services in Palo Alto, Redwood City, & Santa Clara, CA.

Brushing and flossing are the first line of defense when it comes to preventing the plaque buildup that causes gum disease, but plaque that builds up causes tartar, and that needs to be removed by a dentist.

Hence, regular visits to your dental doctor and periodic periodontal checkups are important. Periodontal services and treatment depend upon the type of gum disease and how far the condition has progressed. Good oral hygiene at home can prevent periodontal disease from becoming more serious. Brushing twice a day, flossing your teeth daily, eating a balanced diet, and visiting your dentist regularly can help prevent periodontal disease from recurring.

At Blue Turtle Dental, we provide non-surgical and surgical procedures to treat gum diseases. Schedule an appointment with our best dentist in Redwood City and Palo Alto dental team to find the best periodontal services and solutions to your gum problems.

What is the difference between gingivitis and periodontitis?

The first stage of gum disease is called gingivitis and is the only stage that is reversible. During this stage, bacteria in the plaque can cause inflammation in the gums that can in turn result the gums to easily bleed during brushing. In this stage, the gums are infected, but the teeth are firmly planted in their sockets.

If not treated in time, gingivitis can lead to a more serious, destructive form of gum disease called periodontitis, when the inner layers of the gum and bone pull away from the teeth and form pockets that in turn attract debris and harmful bacteria. Over time, the bacteria in the plaque and pockets generate toxins that further break down the bones and connective tissue that hold the tooth in place, eventually leading to tooth loss.

What procedures do you provide to treat gum diseases?

At Blue Turtle Dental, we provide non-surgical and surgical procedures, including deep cleaning (or root planning and scaling), extraction, and tissue and bone graft to treat periodontal diseases.

Root Planing & Scaling – During deep cleaning, your dentist will clean your teeth below your gum line. At Blue Turtle Dental, we provide high-tech periodontal services and use specialized tools or soft-tissue lasers to clean away calcified tartar and plaque from around the affected teeth. We use single Tooth Anesthesia to quickly and comfortably numb the affected area without any daunting syringes or pain, so your experience is comfortable and relaxed.

Tissue Graft – Once the soft tissue has pulled back further away from the affected tooth, there is no way to regenerate the tissue. We perform the tissue graft procedure to cover tooth roots and help provide support to your teeth and underlying bones.

Bone Graft – A minor surgical procedure that allows your dentist to add grafting material to the surrounding bone around the affected teeth and help regenerate the supporting bone, thus increasing bone support and helping keep teeth in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Good oral hygiene at home can prevent periodontal disease from becoming more serious. Brushing twice a day, flossing your teeth daily, eating a balanced diet, and visiting your dentist regularly can help prevent the periodontal disease from recurring. Keep in mind though that gingivitis and periodontitis can be the result of not enough brushing or flossing but there are other risk factors such as smoking, diabetes, certain medications and a genetic susceptibility that can affect gum health. Regular cleanings with your dental care provider are, therefore, essential.

Some symptoms of gum disease include bad breath that won’t go away, red, swollen gums, tender, or bleeding gums, painful chewing, loose or sensitive teeth, and receding gums or longer appearing teeth. However, remember that you can have gum disease and have no warning signs or symptoms, so regular dental checkups are essential to prevent and treat gum diseases.

If you have recently started flossing to improve dental health, you may experience some bleeding as a result and it may take a week or so for your gums to settle down and the bleeding to stop. If your gums are bleeding because of gum disease, it’s best to talk to your dentist for an individual prognosis. Some early gum diseases can be treated with improved dental hygiene while more advanced diseases require periodontal procedures.

It is estimated that over 50 percent of men and women in the United States experience anxiety while visiting the dentist, with about 25 percent of people cancelling their appointments because of this fear. At Blue Turtle Dental, we utilize the most advanced techniques and technology, including single tooth anesthesia, to maximize patient comfort and safety and turn your periodontal checkup & treatments into a relaxing experience.

Having gum disease puts you at a higher risk of developing other health complications, including strokes, respiratory disease, heart disease, diabetes, and ulcers. Periodontal disease, which is a progression of gum disease, can also lead to these systemic health issues.

Gum disease and more progressed periodontal diseases should be treated as early as possible. Delaying treatment can not only aggravate your dental health and cause loss of tooth, periodontal diseases are also associated with other systemic health problems, including stroke and poor cardiovascular health among others.

Periodontal treatment coverage can get a little complicated, so we will go over everything with you, step by step, so you can make an informed decision.

Procedures can include: scaling, root planing or deep cleaning, gum grafts, tissue grafts and bone grafting. Insurance will usually cover up to 80% for deep cleaning, but there are many variables involved for other procedures. We will go through every detail with you so you understand what is covered, what is not and why. If you’d like to discuss your case with us, please call or text us at: (650) 503-6777
